Thinking about industry decline: A qualitative meta-analysis and future research directions

Abstract: We analyze historical and longitudinal research focusing on industry decline. Our analysis suggests that the literature's general reliance on a few meta-theoretical arguments has important consequences for how decline is framed and explained. We identify four meta-theoretical clusters in the literature: politics and market dynamics are seen as exogenous factors with deterministic features, whereas technology and management capabilities are framed as firm-internal failures with causally questionable explanation… Show more

“…So what policy perspective should we take with regard to a mature or declining TIS? Should a TIS performance assessment then follow the intention of making the TIS strong again and to maintain or improve the focal technology -a perspective often taken in the literature on industry decline (Lamberg et al, 2017)? Or should the assessment be guided by the goal of accelerating decline, and give way for emerging and possibly more sustainable alternatives (Kivimaa and Kern, 2016)?…”

“…This is because most of these studies has tended to focus on the emergence and diffusion of niche technologies (Markard, 2018). Relatively few studies have focused on the decline of incumbent technologies (see, for example, Lamberg et al, 2018;Turnheim and Geels, 2012). Of these, most have focused on the decline of a specific incumbent technology (for example, coal) with limited recognition of multi-technology interaction (for example, interaction between gas and coal) (Sanden and Hillman, 2011).…”

“…Step 3: Analytical procedures My analytical reading of the corpus was guided by standard coding techniques of qualitative research, which is appropriate for reviewing a body of mostly fragmented texts (Lamberg, Ojala, & Peltoniemi, 2017). I started to read and analyse the corpus by an initial set of attributes, such as research object(s), geographical foci, research periods, methods, level of analysis, and used theories, whereas other categories emerged at later stages of my investigation.…”
