“…Due to its good chemical stability and biocompatibility, SiO 2 has become the most widely applied MNPs surface modification material. According to the properties of the initiator, upon adding a suitable silane coupling agent, active functional groups such as aldehyde group, 51 vinyl group, 52,53 sulfhydryl group, 54 amino group 55,56 and hydroxyl group 57,58 can be modified on the magnetic SiO 2 . For example, Zhou et al 54 prepared hollow Fe 3 O 4 microspheres with small mass and good dispersion by hydrothermal method.…”

The magnetic microspheres were modified with mesoporous SiO 2 , and then sulfhydryl groups were introduced, and the chemically grafted α-vinyl ether-γ-thiolactone monomer performed surface-imprinting on bovine serum albumin (BSA).…”

“…Compared with acrylic functional monomers, thiolactonebased functional monomers are nontoxic, 39 and the thioester unit can be opened via primary amine ligands (aminolysis reaction) in a gentle aqueous medium to produce a thiol group and simultaneously graft another functional group (from the primary amine ligand) by an amide bond. [40][41][42] Therefore, it will be of great advantage to construct PIPs by using polyamine compounds for aminolysis of thiolactone-based functional monomers and thiolactone-based crosslinkers. The abundant amide bonds generated by the reaction are beneficial for improving the affinity of PIPs for proteins, because they not only form multiple hydrogen bonding interactions with the template proteins, but also improve the stability of the imprinting cavities of PIPs by increasing the rigidity of the polymer chains.…”

“…The rebinding capacity of the protein imprinted materials is up to 505 AE 15 mg g À1 and the imprinting factor reaches 4.09, which is superior to most of the protein imprinted materials reported when considering adsorption capability and specificity together. 10,25,26,41…”

“…Although, thiolactones feature a large variety of possibilities in terms of post-functionalization only very few reports address surface modifications of particles with thiolactones. [28] Herein, we present a toolbox approach utilizing polymer decorated silica particles as a precursor that can easily introduce multiple functionalities for a wide range of different applications. Our system is based on colloidal silica modified with statistical co-polymer brushes incorporated with thiolactone moieties (PSiO 2 NP).…”
