Third Type of Plasmid Conferring Gentamicin Resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract: R1033 is a plasmid of compatibility group P (= P1) transferred from a wild strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It confers resistance to gentamicin by gentamicin acetyl-transferase 1 and to kanamycin and neomycin by neomycin phosphotransferase 1.The self-transmissible R factors of Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates have been assigned to three compatibility groups by Bryan and his collaborators (2)(3)(4). Group P1 contains the R factors that in Escherichia coli K-12 constitute group P (13). Group P2 plasmids… Show more

“…Tn5036 is from an E. cloacae strain isolated from the intestine of a toad found near a mercury mine in Russia and the closely related Tn3926 is from a Y. enterocolitica strain found in milk in France. R1033, which contains Tn1696, was recovered from a clinical Pseudomonas strain isolated in Spain prior to 1975 (42). This emphasizes the connection between environmental, food-borne, and clinical bacteria.…”

“…Tn1696 was originally found in plasmid R1033 (36), isolated from a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain (42), and Tn21 was found in plasmid NR1 (R100) (10), isolated from a Shigella flexneri strain (29). Early comparisons revealed similarities (40).…”

“…Plasmids RP4, R702 or R1033, for example, interact reciprocally with R751, eliminating and being eliminated by it Smith et al, 1975). Plasmid R772 eliminates R751 efficiently but is subject to elimination only after a long delay and, in the absence of selection, strains carrying both plasmids segregate far more R75 1-progeny than R772-progeny.…”

“…In4 was found in plasmid R1033 of a P. aeruginosa strain isolated in 1975 (23). The In151 backbone differed from that of In4 by the presence of a partial copy of IS6100; i.e., In151 had the 5=-CS, 3=-CS, and a complete copy of IS6100 located downstream of the 3=-CS.…”
