Thoracoscopy and Solid Tumors in Children: A Multicenter Study

Abstract: Thoracoscopy is a safe, effective approach for the evaluation and resection of solid lung tumors and for biopsy. Thoracoscopic resection of metastatic lesions is reasonable for nephroblastoma, but a thoracotomy is suggested for other metastases.

“…They found no differences in the incidence of complications between the open and thoracoscopic resection patients. Interestingly, the incidence of Horner's syndrome was 11% overall in our series (4/37) that is consistent with the reported incidence of 3% to 29% [4][5][6]15,16]. The incidence of Horner's syndrome is likely related to the location of the tumor in the superior cervical sympathetic chain ganglion and not the mode of resection.…”

“…After the year 2000, most thoracic neuroblastomas at our institution (11/14) have been resected using a thoracoscopic approach. The minimally invasive approach has several well-accepted advantages including enhanced visualization, shorter length of stay, and less postoperative pain [4,6,7]. We sought to confirm that in the case of thoracic neuroblastoma, a thoracoscopic approach would indeed provide patients with these advantages without negatively affecting outcome.…”

“…sont rarement pratiquées mais elles laissent des séquelles cutanées parfois notables. La chirurgie mini-invasive (vidéo-thoracoscopie, chirurgie vidéo-assistée, médiastinoscopie) pratiquée depuis quelques années a permis de réduire les séquelles esthé-tiques des chirurgies thoraciques [3,4].…”

“…Many investigators have enthusiastically reported their experience with VATS for pediatric mediastinum neurogenic tumor resection [5,[7][8][9][10]. Despite these benefits, the use of VATS to treat intrathoracic malignancies in childhood is still controversial [11].…”
