Three-dimensional control of alluvial fans by rock uplift in an extensional regime: Aydın Range, Aegean extensional province

Abstract: Tectonics imparts a first-order control on the overall morphology of alluvial fan systems in extensional settings by influencing sediment flux and accommodation space, while other factors such as climate, catchment lithology, and fault footwall characteristics are secondary. Previous alluvial fan modeling studies have focused on the link between the three-dimensional development of alluvial fans and rock uplift, however, despite the potential influence of tectonics on the overall three-dimensional morphology o… Show more

“…Geologically, the Pergamon micro-region is located in the western Extensional Province of Anatolia, which is regarded as one of the most rapidly extending regions on Earth (Özpolat et al, 2022). The NE-striking Miocene Zeytindağ and Örenli–Eğiller Grabens and the Plio-Pleistocene Bergama Graben formed under tectonic stress (Bozkurt, 2003; Yang et al, 2021).…”

“…For example, Özpolat et al. (2022) suggest that rock uplift rates along the BMGF are larger in the easternmost segment, whereas we model the highest slip rates in the center of the faults. The actual slip rates for the studied period are difficult to estimate.…”

“…The height/erosion depth of each landslide was calculated using the DOD value was used to calculate. The total volume of a landslide body is the sum of the DOD values of all grid cells multiplied by the unit grid cell area 48 , 49 . Thus, we calculated the volume of each landslide individually as: where is the volume of the landslide numbered , with = 1–22; is the total number of grid cells for that particular landslide; is the elevation difference of each grid cell in the landslide area, that is, the DOD value of each grid cell; represents the area of the unit grid cell (i.e., 30 m × 30 m).…”
