Three-Dimensional Evaluation of the Effects of Kinesio Taping on Postoperative Swelling and Pain after Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion

Abstract: ObjectivesThe purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of kinesio taping on pain and swelling after surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion.Material and MethodsA total of 21 (12 male and 9 female) patients with transverse maxillary deficiency were enrolled in the study. Kinesio taping (KT) was applied unilaterally in each patient, whereby sides of the face with KT application were included into the (a) KT group and the other sides were included into the (b) non-KT group. Changes in facial v… Show more

“…19 In addition to tape measurements, edema analyses can also be performed with 2D photographs or 3D face-scanning devices. [16][17][18][19]36 The reproducibility and reliability of measurements made with photography and 3D scanners are improved compared to tape or landmark measurement methods. 18,37 Postoperative edema reaches its maximum level 2 or 3 days after surgery procedure.…”

“…This method was proposed by Amin and Laskin to measure the volume of edema after mandibular tooth extraction; we modified it considering that the edema may intensify in the middle region of the face. Recently, volumetric evaluation on stereophotogrammetry has been frequently performed in the fields of medicine and dentistry [14][15][16] In addition, stereophotogrammetry has been used in many studies, such as those on edema assessment after a third molar extraction and on long-term evaluation of facial volumetric differences after orthognathic surgeries [17][18][19][20].…”

“…Elastic therapeutic tape, also called kinesiology tape, Kinesio tape, k-tape, or KT, was developed by Dr. K. Kase in the 1970s with the intent of treating pain and disability associated with sports injuries and other physical disorders. When stretched beyond its normal length and applied, it recoils and creates a pulling force on the skin, thus improving blood and lymph flow by alleviating hemorrhage and congestion of lymphatic fluid [14][15][16] . Currently, there is limited evidence of its usefulness in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.…”
