The reliability of high-rise buildings’ rigid-pile composite foundations primarily relies on the load test results of single-pile composite foundations. Field load tests were conducted for a high-rise building in the loess area of China, the results conformed to the design requirements. Nevertheless, the buildings experienced significant settlement after construction, which was quite different from the test results. Investigating bearing disparities between the single-pile and group-pile composite foundations in high-rise structures was necessary. Firstly, conducting an indoor interface shear test to propose a pile–soil hyperbolic contact model and integrate it into the numerical model. Subsequently, a finite element model was employed that accounts for pile–soil interactions in order to analyze discrepancies in bearing. The results show that the settlement difference rises by 56.4% as the load escalates by 100 kPa from the initial level and increases by 28.9% as the load ascends by 100 kPa to the final level. The settlement difference changes with an increasing load in a hardened curve pattern. Furthermore, differences in pile bearing characteristics and pile–soil interaction were analyzed. Negative friction occurs within 1/4 of the pile length within group-pile composite foundations, while in single-pile composite foundations, the range contracts to 1/10.

When using pile composite foundation reinforcement for embankments in soft foundation sections, the embankment is prone to differential settlement, sliding, and even collapse. Based on the failure characteristics of pile composite foundation, this article proposes a reinforcement scheme using 'inclined-straight double-row piles' at the toe of the embankment slope. Through model tests, the deformation process, bending moment, and horizontal displacement of the pile body under lateral loading were compared for multiple sets of 'inclined-straight double-row piles'. Combined with numerical simulation analysis, the load-deformation characteristics and failure modes of the inclined-straight double-row piles under lateral loading were revealed, and a calculation analysis model was proposed to provide reference for the practical engineering application. The following conclusions were mainly drawn: (1) Under lateral loading, the inclined-straight double-row piles experience horizontal displacement, followed by bending deformation, with the inner piles failing first and the outer piles failing later, showing correlation. The failure load of the double straight piles falls between the inner and outer piles of the inclined-straight double-row piles. Increasing the bending stiffness of the inner piles and the inclination of the outer piles will significantly improve the overall stability. (2) When subjected to lateral loading, the inclined-straight double-row piles may experience overturning failure due to excessive lateral movement of the pile body or fracture failure due to excessive load on the pile body. (3) Calculation analysis models were developed for the overturning failure mode and pile body fracture failure mode.

The mechanical properties of soil in soft soil area are poor, and the settlement of the underlying layer in the composite foundation accounts for a large proportion of the total settlement. At present, most of the research focuses on the settlement of the reinforced area, and the research on the settlement of the underlying layer is of great significance for the settlement of soft soil composite foundation. The differences in load transfer modes of soil and pile are analyzed, and based on the Boussinesq solution and Mindlin solution, a calculation method for the stress and settlement of the underlying layer in flexible and rigid pile composite foundation is proposed. The relative displacement of soil and pile in flexible pile composite foundation is small, and the negative friction can be ignored, but the influence of effective pile length should be considered. The relative displacement of soil and pile in rigid pile composite foundation is large, so the negative friction should be considered. Part of soil top stress is transmitted to the pile via negative friction, and then the pile axial force is transmitted back to the soil via positive friction. In addition to effective pile length, the change of stress transfer path caused by negative friction should also be considered in settlement calculation.
