Three-dimensional subband coding of video

Abstract: We describe and show the results of video coding based on a three-dimensional (3-D) spatio-temporal subband decomposition. The results include a 1-Mbps coder based on a new adaptive differential pulse code modulation scheme (ADPCM) and adaptive bit allocation. This rate is useful for video storage on CD-ROM. Coding results are also shown for a 384-kbps rate that are based on ADPCM for the lowest frequency band and a new form of vector quantization (geometric vector quantization (GVQ)) for the data in the highe… Show more

“…Prior work [5,6,30] transformed the real numbers at the output of 3D DCT to bits and applied to them Huffman coding making them fragile to channel errors, and hence could not benefit from the linearity of transform. In contrast, SoftCast operates on the output of 3D DCT in the real field.…”

“…Finally, SoftCast leverages a rich literature in signal and image processing, including decorrelation transforms such as 3D DCT [30], the least square estimator [24], the Hadamard transform [2], and optimal linear transforms [25]. SoftCast uses these tools in a novel PHY-video architecture to deliver a video quality that scales smoothly with channel quality.…”

“…The image is a two-dimensional subband decomposed using Daubechies 16 wavelet filters, while every two consecutive video frames are 3-D subband decomposed [15], [16] together using Harr filtering in time domain and wavelet filtering in spatial domain. Targeted average bit rates range from 0.3 to 1.0 bpp.…”

“…This digital signature based scheme uses temporal wavelet transform for the generation of message authentication code. After the extraction of GOFs from the video, these GOFs are recursively decomposed into high pass band up to a certain level using temporal wavelet transform [46]. At this level the high pass band consists of two frames.…”
