Three-Dimensional Ultrahigh-Resolution Optical Coherence Tomography of Macular Diseases

Abstract: High-speed UHR OCT offers unprecedented, realistic, 3-D imaging of ocular diseases at all epi-, intra- and subretinal levels. A complete 3-D data set of the macular layers allows a comprehensive analysis of focal and diffuse diseases, as well as identification of dynamic pathomechanisms.

“…Recently, a report was published that showed the use of FD OCT to create volumetric representations of various macular lesions, which is an extension of the technique we have illustrated in this article. 16 Other reports have been published which demonstrate similar mapping techniques using time-domain OCT. 17,18,28 In those time-domain models, however, the map was created from a series of C-scans, a potential weakness of which is that most clinicians rely on B-scans for evaluation of the retina. Therefore, high-quality B-scans are more desirable than C-scans.…”

“…A report utilizing this technology to create volumetric representations of retinal lesions has recently been published. 16 In this paper, we describe a technique that can be applied to OCT imaging to produce more detailed retinal maps. It involves performing a rapid sweep of serial OCT B-scans through the macula, analogous to a modern computed tomography scanner.…”

“…Further improvements in visualisation of intra-and subretinal morphology, [32][33][34] advances in the understanding of anatomic correlates as well as refinements of measurements 35,36 are anticipated and may enhance the analysis of retinal images in clinical trials.…”

“…It is also the key to imaging large comprehensive 3 D volumes [173] or to the time-resolved observation of dynamic processes [44,45,167]. The recent commercialization of high speed line cameras and swept sources will therefore be an important factor driving the development of the next generation of OCT systems.…”
