Three-dimensional ultrasound (3D US) methods in the evaluation of calcular and non-calcular ureteric obstructive uropathy

Abstract: The 3D US methods in case of obstructive uropathy have proved to be useful as an easy, mobile and non-invasive diagnostic tool, improving 2D US diagnostic utility.

“…The diagnostic approach for children with urolithiasis relies on ultrasonography and kidney-ureterbladder plain radiography (KUB). Ultrasound is the preferred test since it is noninvasive, easy and very effective [5]. However, the sensitivity of US in detecting ureter stones is low [6], as in case 3.…”

“…However, complications such as acute or chronic rejection, drug-induced renal injury, transplant kidney artery stenosis, BKV associated nephropathy (BKVAN), and renal disease recurrence should be ruled out, and a transplant kidney puncture biopsy may be performed if necessary. The ultrasonography is the preferred diagnostic method [ 9 ], shows the separation of renal pelvis or dilatation of ureter (Fig. 1 A), emission computed tomography (ECT) can distinguish functional or mechanical obstruction to a certain extent [ 8 ], magnetic resonance urography (MRU) can provide three-dimensional images and fully display the shape of stenosis site (Fig.…”

“…Many authors consider the poor-edge definition of two-dimensional TRUS (due to the thick plane of viewing and speckles are the main reasons for lesion disorientations), and the multiple trials in redirecting the tip of needle into the best point for drainage within the cavity of prostatic abscesses. [ 10 11 12 ] Transrectal sectional sonography (TRSS) is an upgrade of dimensional US (three-dimensional US) imaging, based on the production of real-time, multiresolution very thin (0.5-1 mm) contiguous optical slicing of the three-dimensional volume. Each slice has a specific color and represents a specific location on the reference plane.…”
