Three New, Seemingly-Cryptic Species in the Lichen GenusCaloplaca(Teloschistaceae) Distinguished in Two-Phase Phenotype Evaluation

Abstract: The new lichen association, Verrucario viridulae-Staurotheletum hymenogoniae (Aspicilion contortae Roux 2009, Aspicilietalia calcareae Roux 2009, Verrucarietea nigrescentis Wirth 1980) is described here. It is formed on marl limestone pebbles in arid landscapes in the Northern Black Sea lowland. Forty-six species of lichens and ten lichenicolous fungi were observed and Staurothele hymenogonia, Verrucaria muralis s. lat., V. viridula are diagnostic for the association. The new association is a component of the N… Show more

“…However, it is presently known that morphological characters may not be sufficient for detecting taxa ( Bickford et al, 2007 ; Crespo & Pérez-Ortega, 2009 ). On the other hand, careful morphological analysis of distinct phylogenetic lineages may lead to the recognition of some previously overlooked characters ( Kroken & Taylor, 2001 ; Del Prado et al., 2007 ; McCune & Altermann, 2009 ; Frolov et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Ascospore measurements for each species are given in the following format (after Frolov et al . 2016): , where minimum and maximum are extreme values, is the smallest mean value measured for each individual collection, is the mean of all values measured in that species, and is the largest mean value measured for each individual collection. The measurements are followed by the standard deviation (SD) of , N=the total number of measurements for all samples of that species and n =the number of samples from which measurements were made.…”

“…The spores of recently collected specimens were first killed by warming apothecial sections in a drop of water, then allowing them to dry, and then remounting in water. Ascospore measurements for each species are given in the following format (after Frolov et al 2016): ðminimumÀÞ x 1 À x 2 À x 3 ðÀmaximumÞ, where minimum and maximum are extreme values, x 1 is the smallest mean value measured for each individual collection, x 2 is the mean of all values measured in that species, and x 3 is the largest mean value measured for each individual collection. The measurements are followed by the standard deviation (SD) of x 2 , N= the total number of A.
