Three rare and little known cryptogonimid digeneans from the sciaenid fish Sciaena umbra (L.) in the western Mediterranean

Abstract: Three species of cryptogonimid digeneans are redescribed from the gut of Sciaena umbra off Corsica. The systematics of the three species, Metadena pauli (Vlassenko, 1931), Paracryptogonimus aloysiae (Stossich, 1885) n. comb. and Anoiktostoma coronatum (Wagener, 1852), are discussed. The latter two species, which have not been reported for more than 100 years, have previously been confused and synonymised with each other. P. aloysiae, which is transferred to Paracryptogonimus from Anoiktostoma, is restricted to… Show more

“…Brown meagre is cultured on a small scale in some Mediterranean countries such as Greece, and it may be a good alternative to gilthead sea bream and European sea bass (2). It shows a wide geographical distribution through the Mediterranean and Black Sea and along the Eastern Atlantic coast, from the English Channel to Senegal (1,3). Various studies were performed for the determination of the parasite fauna of brown meagre in different regions such as the western Mediterranean, Greece, and the Black Sea (2-6).…”

“…Interestingly, Anoiktostoma coronatum (Wagener, 1852) Stossich, 1899, a parasite of the sciaenid Sciaena umbra Linnaeus, 1758, also only inhabits the rectum of its host and is similar to C. thomasi in having a uterus that loops well into the forebody, oral spines and a trilobed or few lobed ovary (although some specimens may have an entire ovary (Bartoli and Gibson 1995)). This species can be distinguished from C. thomasi by lacking caeca that open via ani at the posterior end of the body, a prepharynx, having opposite to slightly oblique testes and in its restriction to Mediterranean sciaenids.…”
