Thrombocytosis is a significant indictor of hypercoagulability, prognosis and recurrence in gastric cancer

Abstract: Although thrombocytosis has been reported in a variety of cancer types, the standard of thrombocytosis in gastric cancer (GC) and the association between thrombocytosis and the clinicopathological features of patients with GC remain unclear. In the present study, 1,763 GC patients were retrospectively filtered by preoperative thrombocytosis and compared with control group A (n=107) that had benign gastric lesions and control group B (n=100) that were GC patients with a normal platelet (PLT) count. Associations… Show more

“…Four articles reported the link between preoperative platelet count and lymph node metastasis [6,11,26,27]. The incidence of lymph node metastasis was 1.62-fold higher in patients with elevated platelet count than in patients with normal platelet count (OR=1.62, 95% CI: 1.08-2.42, P=0.019) (Fig.…”

“…it is thought that an elevated level of NLR reflects increased systemic inflammatory changes in the host, which may associated with poorer survival in GC [7][8][9]. Additionally, a number of studies indicated that platelets played an important role in the process of distant dissemination [10][11][12]. Some evidence revealed that platelets protect tumor cells against immune system and facilitate tumor cells adhesion to vascular endothelium through the formation of tumor thrombus and interactions between tumor cells and platelet ligands [13].…”

“…Thus, D-dimers [126,127] and thrombocytosis [128] have prognostic role in gastric cancer. In turn, D-dimers and prothrombin time are associated with lymph node involvement [129].…”

“…First, activated platelets serve as procoagulant surfaces, thus amplifying coagulation reactions. Second, platelets adhering to endothelium facilitate the adhesion of mononuclear cells (which on their own exert various proangiogenic activities) to endothelial cells and their transmigration into the extravascular space [27] . It was also reported that platelets are able to induce angiogenesis in vivo.…”
