Thymus Polypeptide Preparation Tactivin Restores Learning and Memory in Thymectomied Rats

Abstract: We studied the effects of tactivin and splenic polypeptides on learning and memory of thymectomized animals. In 3-week rats, thymectomy blocked active avoidance conditioning. Injections of tactivin (0.5 mg/kg) during 1 month after surgery restored learning capacity; splenic polypeptides were ineffective.

“…The first reason for the choice is that methyluracil stimulates the recovery of B-lymphocytes [ 13 ]. Peptide preparations based on thymus hormones (thymosin, thymopoietin, thymulin) [ 5 ], and preparations of bone marrow origin (myelopid, leukogen, lenograstim) [ 33 ] do not stimulate the recovery of B-lymphoid cells, while herbal preparations are adaptogens [ 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]. The second reason for choosing methyluracil is that the ionic compound N,N-dimethyl-N-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) propane-1-ammonium iodide (TIC) is structurally more similar to methyluracil (2,4-dioxo-6-methylpyrimidine).…”

“…The index of NC cells in the spleen in the placebo group is identical to the index of NC cells in the spleen in the methyluracil group. It is known that when the bone marrow is empty, the spleen begins to perform a compensatory hematopoietic function in the body of an adult human [ 5 , 40 ]. The stress factor in the placebo group stimulates the restoration of hematopoiesis.…”

“…To investigate the role of the thymus in muscle growth, we removed the thymus from adult mice according to a previously reported protocol (32)(33)(34). Four months after the operation, the mice showed reduced body weights compared to those of control mice (with sham operation), but the lean weights were comparable (p > 0.05) (Fig.…”

“…Pharmacological treatments are initially recommended when non-pharmacological options do not attain satisfying sleep (14). Currently, the commonly used ageing animal models include: D-galactose (D-gal)-induced subacute (15), β-amyloid induced (16,17), thymic senescence (18), rapid (19) and natural (20) ageing models. The ageing model induced by D-gal has been widely used (21,22) and has been evaluated in behavioral, biochemical and neurochemical aspects (23).…”
