Thyroid carcinoma producing β‐human chorionic gonadotropin shows different clinical behavior

Abstract: Columnar cell variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (CCV-PTC) is an unusual neoplasm, the clinical behavior of which mainly depends on the encapsulation or infiltration. Patients with extensive extrathyroidal extension usually have an aggressive biological behavior. This study confirmed that beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) secreting invasive CCV-PTC has good prognosis comparing with a cohort of follicular cell differentiated thyroid carcinoma. On the contrary, positive immunoreaction with β-hCG was … Show more

“…We found that BDE209 has the potential to induce biphasic responses in normal human thyroid follicular cells (Nthy-ori 3-1), which indicates that the promotion of cell proliferation is manifested only when the exposure dose is under a certain threshold, while above this threshold, it inhibits cell growth. This result is consistent with several experimental studies showing apparent nonmonotonic effects of BDE209 in various cell lines and organisms [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. In consideration of the fact that an environmentally relevant serum concentration of BDE209 in humans has a low threshold, we focused mainly on the effects and mechanism of low concentrations of BDE209 on the thyroid [ 19 , 32 ].…”

“…The latter can confuse the diagnostician, but the positivity for TTF1, PAX8, and thyroglobulin solves this quandary. Immunoreactivity for β-human chorionic gonadotropin was also reported in a case [10]. Unlike tall cell and classical variants, BRAF V600E mutation is relatively less common and has been reported in about one third of cases [8,11].…”

“…Paraneoplastic manifestations have been reported in anaplastic thyroid carcinoma. The manifestations comprise ectopic secretion of human chorionic gonadotrophin (Gu et al 2018), fibroblastic growth factor 23 (giving rise to osteomalacia) (Abate et al 2016), granulocyte colonystimulating factor (give rise to leucocytosis) (Kang et al 2013), parathyroid hormone-related protein (give rise to hypercalcemia) (Iwai et al 2004) as well as hypertrophic osteoarthropathy likely to be the effect of secretion of platelet derived growth factor or vascular endothelial growth factor (Vico et al 1992). Similar to anaplastic thyroid carcinoma, paraneoplastic manifestations could occur in patients with primary squamous cell carcinoma of thyroid.…”
