Tibolone Improves the Degenerative Changes of Tongue Mucosa in Ovariectomized Female Rats

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effect of sex steroid deficiency on the mucosa of rat tongue as well as the influence of Tibolone. Methods: The tongue mucosa of ovariectomized rats (OVX) was compared to sham-operated rats by histology, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The same evaluation was also performed after hormone replacement therapy. Results: The OVX animals demonstrated significant degenerative changes of tongue mucosa such as reduced thickness of epithelium with an i… Show more

“…The wide and clearly distinguished interlobular septa of the parotid and submandibular salivary glands in OVX are the result of atrophy of acinar and ductal cells due to estrogen deficiency 19,20) . Atrophy occurred due to vascular damage and permeability of blood vessels between lobes and similar results have been reported in the submandibular gland of elderly postmenopausal rats 21) , oral mucosal epithelium of OVX 22) , and the sublingual region of OVX 23) . Estrogen exhibits inhibitory effects on apoptosis in breast cancer cells, cardiac myocytes, endothelial cells, neuronal cells, and prostate cells 24) .…”
