Tick infestation in spur-thighed tortoise population: a pilot study for unraveling epidemiological patterns and demographic consequences

Amalia Segura,
Marta Rafael,
Rita Vaz-Rodrigues
et al.

Abstract: Ectoparasites, such as ticks, modulate host population dynamics by impacting demographic traits. They transmit infectious agents among their hosts, posing a critical threat to animal and public health. This study aimed to characterize and analyze the Hyalomma aegyptium infestation on one of its main hosts, the spur-thighed tortoise, its effects on demographic traits, and to determine the diversity of infectious agents present in both ticks and tortoises in the Maamora forest (northwestern Morocco). Our results… Show more

“…For the PCR, the following protocols were set up. An initial denaturation step lasted for 5 min at 95°C, 30 cycles of denaturation at 95°C for 30 s, primer annealing for 15 s at 50°C, extension for 37 s at 72°C, and the final extension for 5 min at 72°C and for ompB gene (Segura et al, 2023 ). The reaction consisted of the same protocol as had been used for the citrate synthase gene ( gltA ).…”
