Tight glycaemic control is a key factor in wound healing enhancement strategies in an experimental diabetes mellitus model

Abstract: This study demonstrates the impact that diabetes has on acute wound healing and suggests that wound modulating agents must be tested in both the tightly glucose-controlled as well as the poorly glucose-controlled diabetic animal models prior to proceeding with translational clinical studies.

“…These findings imply that oral Aloe vera which combines with HUVEC transplantation helps lower blood glucose, thus improving wound angiogenesis and blood flow through an increase in VEGF and a subsequent wound healing promotion. The findings also support earlier reports that good glycemic control is associated with improved wound healing in diabetic animal models and patients with diabetic foot ulcers [35,36,37,38]. Another possible explanation for Aloe vera increasing HUVEC transplantation efficacy is the direct beneficial effect of oral Aloe vera on transplanted [21,22].…”

“…It is reported that tight glycemic control is a key factor in wound healing in other experimental diabetic models ( 25 ). In the Goto-Kakizaki rat, a non-obese type 2 diabetic model, a glycemic control with metformin-treatment improved the peri-implant wound healing ( 26 ).…”

“…In many studies, OH-P levels were measured to assess wound healing and fibrosis (1,16,17). In the study by O'Sullivan et al (18), higher OH-P levels were observed in subjects showing improved wound healing. In studies of intestinal anastomoses, Yamaguchi et al (16) reported elevated levels of OH-P in subjects with better wound healing.…”
