Background Water and energy shortages and food security challenges associated with global warming are essential issues affecting human survival and development. Rice is one of the world's top three staple food crops. In the present study, the energy footprint (EF), carbon footprint (CF), energy production efficiency (EPE), carbon production efficiency (CPE), and economic benefit (EB) of dry direct‐seeded rice (DSR), wet direct‐seeded rice (WSR), and transplanted rice (TPR), respectively, were integrated and assessed. Results The yield of WSR and TPR was 9.64% and 13.76% higher than that of DSR, respectively. However, DSR has less irrigation and less intensive field tillage; therefore, its energy input, and CF, were 37.47% and 44.29%, and 29.35% and 34.77%, lower than those of WSR and TPR, respectively; the EPE and CPE were obviously improved; and the EB was not lower than that of WSR and TPR. Current rice production relies heavily on non‐renewable energy inputs such as nitrogen fertilizer, diesel, and machinery. Therefore, the key to improving EPE, CPE, and EB in rice production at the same time as reducing CF was to improve water use efficiency and decrease the intensity of paddy tillage. Conclusion The DSR has higher social, economic, and ecological benefits and can be the preferred rice planting method for rice production areas. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

IntroductionConventional rice production techniques are less economical and more vulnerable to sustainable utilization of farm resources as well as significantly contributed GHGs to atmosphere.MethodsIn order to assess the best rice production system for coastal areas, six rice production techniques were evaluated, including SRI-AWD (system of rice intensification with alternate wetting and drying (AWD)), DSR-CF (direct seeded rice with continuous flooding (CF)), DSR-AWD (direct seeded rice with AWD), TPR-CF (transplanted rice with CF), TPR-AWD (transplanted rice with AWD), and FPR-CF (farmer practice with CF). The performance of these technologies was assessed using indicators such as rice productivity, energy balance, GWP (global warming potential), soil health indicators, and profitability. Finally, using these indicators, a climate smartness index (CSI) was calculated.Results and discussionRice grown with SRI-AWD method had 54.8 % higher CSI over FPR-CF, and also give 24.5 to 28.3% higher CSI for DSR and TPR as well. There evaluations based on the climate smartness index can provide cleaner and more sustainable rice production and can be used as guiding principle for policy makers.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have been widely used in agriculture as a new type of Zn fertilizer, and many studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of ZnO NPs on plant growth. However, there are relatively few studies on the effects of application methods and appropriate dosages of ZnO NPs on rice yield, quality, grain Zn content, and distribution. Therefore, in the 2019 and 2020, field trials were conducted with six ZnO NPs basal application dosages of no ZnO NPs, 3.75 kg hm−2, 7.5 kg hm−2, 15 kg hm−2, 30 kg hm−2, and 60 kg hm−2, and the effects of ZnO NPs application on rice yield, quality, grain Zn content, and distribution were investigated. The results demonstrated that applying ZnO NPs in Zn-deficient soils (available Zn < 1.0 mg kg−1) increased rice grain yield by 3.24%–4.86% and 3.51%–5.12% in 2019 and 2020, respectively. In addition, ZnO NPs improved the quality of rice by increasing the head milling rate, reducing chalky grain percentage, and increasing the taste value and breakdown of rice. In terms of Zn accumulation in rice, ZnO NPs application significantly increased the Zn content in both milled rice and brown rice, compared with no Zn treatment, in 2019 and 2020, Zn content in milled rice significantly increased by 20.46%–41.09% and 18.11%–38.84%, respectively, and in brown rice significantly increased by 25.78%–48.30% and 20.86%–42.00%, respectively. However, the Zn fertilizer utilization gradually decreased with increasing ZnO NPs application dosage. From the perspective of yield, rice quality, Zn fertilizer utilization, and Zn accumulation, basal application of 7.5 kg–30 kg hm−2 ZnO NPs is beneficial for rice yield and quality improvement and rice Zn accumulation. This study effectively demonstrated that ZnO NPs could be a potential high‐performed fertilizer for enhancing rice yield, quality, and zinc content of edible grain fraction synergistically.
