Tiller size/density compensation in grazed Tifton 85 bermudagrass swards

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of the tiller size/density compensation mechanism in Tifton 85 bermudagrass swards grazed by sheep under continuous stocking. Treatments corresponded to four sward steady state conditions (5, 10, 15, and 20 cm of sward surface height), maintained by sheep grazing. The experimental design was a complete randomized block with four replicates. Pasture responses evaluated include: tiller population density, tiller mass, leaf mass and leaf area per tiller,… Show more

“…This trend of pastures kept under lower residual leaf area indices to show lower values for TPD was also verified by other authors studying cultivars of Cynodon and Panicum (Carvalho et al, 2000;Sbrissia et al, 2003;Cutrim Junior, 2007). Such fact can be explained as being a response to the size/population density compensation mechanism of tillers existing in communities of superior plants Sbrissia et al, 2003).…”

“…This process occurs through a compensation mechanism of size/ population density of tillers (Matthew et al 1995;Sbrissia et al, 2001Sbrissia et al, , 2003, in which tillers die basically because of competition for light in the canopy. However, when the forage is harvested at 95% of light interception, the intense competition for light is avoided.…”

“…Pesquisas têm revelado a capacidade de ajuste das plantas forrageiras sob diferentes condições de manejo, que é chamada de plasticidade fenotípica (Lemaire & Chapman, 1996). Sob pastejo intenso, se observam pequenos, mas numerosos perfilhos, enquanto poucos e grandes perfilhos são encontrados sob pastejo leniente (Carvalho et al, 2000;Sbrissia et al, 2003).…”
