Time-Domain EMI Measurements using a Low Cost Digitizer to Optimize the Total Measurement Time for a Test Receiver

Abstract: By analyzing electromagnetic interference (EMI) based on its spectral components important time-domain information is lost. Conventional super-heterodyne frequency band stepping EMI test receivers have to use long dwell times for every frequency which makes the total measurement time too long. Often dwell times are set too short, causing time-varying interference, or cyclo-stationary interference, to be detected improperly. The concept of time-varying EMI is also not incorporated in standards, which are only b… Show more

“…Oscilloscope is a device which can perform broadband measurements in the time domain considerably fast. Due to the very high sampling rate, it can capture rare transient effects [18] with ease and produce useful and accurate spectrograms as shown in [19]. Since they directly sample the received voltage wave, phase information is also stored.…”

“…However, these spectrograms are generated within a narrow frequency range. Spectrograms of wide frequency range can be usually achieved with expensive equipment or devices of very high sampling rates such as oscilloscopes [19]. Here, the spectrograms offer a good depiction of the EME even though they have a relative narrow frequency range.…”

“…Results have been processed using an short-time fast Fourier transform (STFFT) incorporating a peak detection similar as was shown in [32]. Possible benefits of using a oscilloscope have been shown [32]- [34], whereas the applicability for full-time domain-based EMI measurements according to CISPR-16-1-1 were shown in [35]. Fig.…”

“…This chapter describes the time-domain measurement techniques needed for assessing EMI causing SM misreadings. The work presented incorporates the research published in [36]- [41]. These measurement techniques have contributed to the SCENT [42] and ETOPIA [43] projects, resulting in several applications [44]- [48] and [49], [50], respectively.…”
