Time-Gap Based Traffic Model for Vehicular Traffic Flow

Abstract: There have been many studies for modeling vehicular traffic flow using fluid models. However, these previous approaches do not accommodate realistic models for traffic density, flow, and velocity. The existing models also fail to uncover the relationships among energy efficiency, capacity, and safety. We investigate traffic networks from a system-level perspective. In result, we provide a time-gap based mathematical traffic model for vehicular traffic flow on highways. Our model explains the widely known trian… Show more

“…2 explains a triangular fundamental diagram proposed by Newell [8] with three principal parameters: the maximum free-flow velocity in a free-flow region, a typical safety length of vehicles, and a mean value of the time-gap of traffic data under congested conditions [9]. Since this time-gap based traffic model is not only supported by empirical traffic measurements but is also simple, we will use this model for estimating traffic flow and providing optimal coordinated ramp-metering control for achieving maximum system throughput.…”

“…There have been a large number of research efforts made to study the traffic flow characteristics up to now; however, they mainly focused on vehicle traffic flow. It is a common method to establish traffic flow models to analyze traffic operation phenomena and traffic congestion rules, [3][4][5] particularly in the field of intelligent transportation system based on information guidance. A series of route guidance algorithms, traffic guidance information release strategies, and optimal location of traffic guidance information releasing devices were proposed.…”
