Time Series Analysis Using Composite Multiscale Entropy

Abstract: Multiscale entropy (MSE) was recently developed to evaluate the complexity of time series over different time scales. Although the MSE algorithm has been successfully applied in a number of different fields, it encounters a problem in that the statistical reliability of the sample entropy (SampEn) of a coarse-grained series is reduced as a time scale factor is increased. Therefore, in this paper, the concept of a composite multiscale entropy (CMSE) is introduced to overcome this difficulty. Simulation results … Show more

“…Lower entropy values also reveal that the signal has reduced complexity and previous findings also show that the brain was reflected due to abnormal behaviour in the rats (12,20,24,32,38,39). In clinical context, it could be expected that this in coordination could be reflected in both psychiatric and cognitive dysfunction as observed in patients with MTLE (40,41).…”

“…The MSE is already used in different fields to analyse different problems, such as human gait dynamics, time series of river flow, heart rate variability, electro seismic time series, social dynamics, time series of traffic flow, chatter to milling process, and vibration of a vehicle etc. These works demonstrated the effective use of MSE algorithm to analyse these complex time series (20).…”

“…Many modified versions of MSE have been developed to describe the multiscale properties of time series [32], such as composite multiscale entropy [33] and time-shift multiscale entropy (TSME) [34]. TSME was proposed by Pham [34], modifying the MSE over time series X of length N, with multiple time shifts at a given time interval kmax.…”

“…We observe that for τ = 1, the original sequence is recovered, whereas for τ > 1 the length of the new sequences is reduced to N/τ. We note that for each scale factor τ, there are τ coarse-grained sequences derived from the original one, as it was recently pointed out in the composite MSE [31,32]. Next, to complete the MSE steps the ApEn algorithm is applied to the sequence y τ k,j for each scale to evaluate the regularity/irregularity in the new block-sequences.…”
