TiO2 nanocrystals – assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric analysis of steroid hormones, amino acids and saccharides. Validation and comparison of methods

Abstract: The possibilities for the application of various TiO2 nanocrystals for substrate-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometric quantitative analysis of steroid hormones, amino acids and saccharides is presented in this work.

“…In this way, the energy burden of gluconeogenesis is transferred to the liver instead of to the muscles, and all available ATP in the muscles can be allocated to muscle contraction. Alterations in the alanine cycle that increase the levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) are linked to the development of type II diabetes 17 …”

“…TiO 2 nanocrystals with various shapes and sizes, such as the colloidal TiO 2 NPs, TiO 2 prolate nanospheroids (TiO 2 PNSs), and TiO 2 nanotubes (TiO 2 NTs), were investigated as matrix of LDI-TOF MS for quantitative analysis of small molecules [ 69 , 70 ]. Results showed that the applicability of individual TiO 2 nanocrystals depended on the analyte, such as all TiO 2 nanocrystals, regardless of their shape, have great potential for the detection and determination of steroid hormones, amino acids and saccharides with good detection limits.…”

“…Metal oxides are gaining in popularity, particularly for analysis of small molecules. TiO 2 nanocrystals of various shapes and sizes have been investigated by Popović et al (2016b) for ionization of carbohydrates, steroids, and amino acids. Results showed that resulting signals were independent of crystal shape although the signal strength varied with the type of substrate (TiO 2 nanoparticles, prolate nanospheroids, or nanotubes).…”
