Tissue Extract Fractions from Starfish Undergoing Regeneration Promote Wound Healing and Lower Jaw Blastema Regeneration of Zebrafish

Abstract: Natural bioactive materials provide an excellent pool of molecules for regenerative therapy. In the present study, we amputate portions of the arms of Archaster typicus starfish, extract and separate the active biomaterials, and compare the effects of each fraction on in vitro wound healing and in vivo lower jaw regeneration of zebrafish. Compared with crude extract, normal hexane fractions (NHFs) have a remarkable effect on cellular proliferation and collective migration, and exhibit fibroblast-like morpholog… Show more

“…Echinoderms, especially sea stars, have been used as model organisms for regenerative studies due to their amazing regenerative potential (Dai, Prithiviraj, Gan, Zhang, & Yan, 2016). The bio-molecules responsible for this property are predominantly the coelomocytes which are the immune cells present in the coelomic fluid (da Silva Laires, 2012).…”

“…37 Water is a critical factor that helps the wound healing of sea stars. 41 Similarly, the healing ability of boroxine systems also needs the stimulation of external water. The self-healing process of the P(4-VPBA 3 -co-PEGMA 1 )−boroxine thermoset was conducted by a cut-and-heal test (Figure 4a).…”
