“…Additional studies have investigated the function of circulating MMP-2 and MMP-9 in BC patients (51,52); the results revealed increased MMP-9 expression and activity in malignant tumors, and enhanced MMP-2 activity in malignant tumors exhibiting high estrogen receptor expression. These studies indicate that serum levels of MMP-2 or -9 may present useful markers for the staging and prognosis of BC and other types of cancer (53), such as prostate adenocarcinoma, in association with prostate-specific antigen levels, gastric cancer and lung carcinoma (54)(55)(56).…”

“…We tested the diagnostic performances of serum and plasma MMP-9 in gastric cancer patients and confirmed that plasma MMP-9 is a better diagnostic marker than serum MMP-9, at least in gastric cancer. This may partly explain why studies measuring serum MMP-9 tend to report nonsignificant results (10,25,34,35), whereas those using plasma samples present more promising data (9,13,15,36,37).…”

“…48,49 While it is true that the presence of lung cancer in some of our patients may have influenced the results, we tried to avoid this bias by collecting lung tissue from areas not affected by tumor and by having included subjects with lung cancer in the control groups. Furthermore, since the highest MMP-2 expression was observed in the group without concomitant cancer (ie, smokers with severe COPD undergoing lung volume reduction surgery), we feel rather confident that our findings of an increased MMP-2 expression in COPD patients are valid.…”
