To study the structures and reactivities of alkali metallated intermediates of calix[4]arenes, three compounds were isolated: [Li(4)(p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-4H)(thf)(4)](2).6 THF (1), [Li(2)(p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-2H)(H(2)O)(mu-H(2)O)(thf)].3 THF (2), and [K(4)(p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-4H)(thf)(5)](2).THF (3). The structure of 1 is shown to be dependent on the coordinating solvent. Partial hydrolysis of 1 leads to the formation of 2. The potassium compound 3 features a different structure to that of 1, due to a higher coordination number as well as stronger cation-pi-bonding interactions.

Ti(IV)/calixarene complexes, formed in situ or previously prepared with standard procedures, can be conveniently used as efficient catalysts in the aldol reaction of Chans silyloxydiene with a range of aldehydes bearing either activating or deactivating groups, including aromatic, heteroaromatic and a,b-unsaturated ones. The structure of both calixarene ligand and aldehyde, as well as the reaction conditions, strongly influence the efficiency of the reaction. NMR experiments in conjunction with the experimental results suggest that the structure of the catalytic species in the Ti(IV)/calixarene system prepared in situ is strongly dependent on the concentration and temperature adopted

Calixarenes are widely used as molecular platforms in supramolecular chemistry.T heir efficient modification is key for appendingf unctional moieties such as binding, sensing, chiral, or hydrophilic subunits. Due to the presence of multiple identicalf unctional groups, selectivef unctionalization of such macrocyclic compounds is highly challenging. Indeed, the control of the chemo-, regio-, stereo-as wella s iteroselectivity is required. Thisr eview describes rational methods leadingt oahigh degree of regio-and/or iteroselectivitya nd classifies them into specific strategies. Many of these strategies are conceptually very general and hopefully will be as ource of inspiration for developing selectivem ethods for other macrocyclic platforms.
