Titanium Elastic Nail - Complications in the Treatment of Paediatric Diaphyseal Fracture of Femur§

Abstract: Background:Femoral shaft fracture is the most common major paediatric orthopaedic. For generations traction and casting was the standard treatment for all femoral shaft fractures in children. Over the past two decades the advantages of fixation and rapid mobilisation have been increasingly recognised. Methods:A prospective study was conducted in five private hospitals in the district of Bankura, West Bengal over a period of two years (April 2010 to March 2012) on 70 patients with closed shaft femur fractures be… Show more

“…9 Bandyopadhyay et al in their study of 70 patients 42 patients (60%) the mechanism of injury was due to motor vehicle accident, 22 (31.42%) were due to fall from height while remaining 4 (8.58%) were due to sports injury. 15 The average duration of surgery in our study was 69.6 minutes. In Singh et al study, the average duration of surgery was 63 minutes.…”

“…However, some series report limb lengthening to be the major reason for poor outcomes. 13,14 We had stringent criteria for selecting only closed pediatric femoral fractures that were hemodynamically stable and without associated trauma making our sample size limited. This is one of the few studies attempting to analyze the risk factors that affect the final outcomes of the pediatric shaft femur fractures treated by TENS.…”

“…Intramedullary osteosynthesis is by far the most widely used method to achieve it. It ensures rapid healing, low rate of complications, and short hospital stay ( 50 , 51 ). Kuntscher nail was used previously, but its use has been almost abandoned with better understanding of the vascularization of the femur proximal part.…”

“…Kuntscher nail was used previously, but its use has been almost abandoned with better understanding of the vascularization of the femur proximal part. The last ten years have brought changes in the insertion methodology, and therefore new fixation techniques ( 51 , 52 ). Fixation method choice depends on the fracture type, patient age, skeletal maturity and body mass index.…”
