Titanium Niobate and Titanium Tantalate Nanosheets as Strong Solid Acid Catalysts

Abstract: HTiNbO 5 , HTi 2 NbO 7 , and HTiTaO 5 nanosheets obtained by exfoliation of protonated cation-exchangeable layered metal oxides are examined as solid acids. These nanosheets exhibit high catalytic activity for esterification of acetic acid and hydrolysis of ethyl acetate, competing with niobic acid, Nb 2 O 5 ‚nH 2 O. NH 3 temperature-programmed desorption reveals that the acidity of the nanosheets corresponds to the density of strong acid sites of H-ZSM-5 or niobic acid. 1 H magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnet… Show more

“…Thus, the surrounding water molecules around Eu 3+ in the interlayer promote the energy transfer process to the Eu 3+ . There are several reports on the state of the hydrogen bonds on the surface of the nanosheet and TiO 2 using 1 H NMR [26][27][28][29][30]. Takagaki and Domen et al reported that there are several types of OH groups in the exfoliated HTiNbO 5 [26,27].…”

“…TiTaO5 − nanosheets were prepared according to the procedure described in the literature [15]. The addition of a TbCl3 (0.1 M 50 ml, pH = 1) or Eu(NO3)3 (0.1 M 6 ml, 0925-8388/$ -see front matter.…”

“…In the case of metal oxides, protonation usually resulted in electrostatic repulsions that facilitated exfoliation. By this procedure, single layers of Ti oxides, [19][20][21][22] Mn oxides, 23 Nb/Ta oxides, [24][25][26] Mo oxides, 27 Ru oxides, 28 and W oxides, 29 as well as sheets of several perovskites 7,9,[30][31][32][33][34][35] have been separated from bulk samples (Fig. 2).…”
