To Incentivize or Not: Impact of Blockchain-Based Cryptoeconomic Tokens on Human Information Sharing Behavior

Abstract: Cryptoeconomic incentives in the form of blockchain-based tokens are seen as an enabler of the sharing economy that could shift society towards greater sustainability. Nevertheless, knowledge of the impact of these tokens on human sharing behavior is still limited and this poses a challenge to the design of effective cryptoeconomic incentives. This study applies the theory of self-determination to investigate the impact of such tokens on human behavior in an information-sharing scenario. By utilizing an experi… Show more

“…They involve the three data-sharing criteria that model the involved trust (data collectors) and risks (data type and context), and they are the ones that explain malleable data-sharing behaviors ( 8 , 15 , 39 ). This large spectrum comes in contrast to earlier experiments and field tests made within a context and involving a specific data-sharing scenario such as online social lending ( 40 ), crowdfunding ( 41 ), and commerce ( 15 , 17 , 42 , 43 ).…”

“…The authors also mention competition management as a challenge, and as advantages, the ease of information sharing and the improvement through competition. Ballandies [71] proposes the use of self-determination theory to investigate the impact of tokens for human behavior. The study analyses the effect of applying blockchain tokens for creating personalized incentives in the context of sharing economies.…”
