To Share or Not to Share: Demand Forecast Sharing in a Distribution Channel

Abstract: T his paper studies information sharing in a distribution channel where the manufacturer possesses better demand-forecast information than the downstream retailer. We examine three information-sharing formats: no information sharing (i.e., the manufacturer ex ante commits to not sharing its forecast), voluntary information sharing (i.e., the manufacturer makes the sharing decision ex post after receiving the forecast), and mandatory information sharing (i.e., the manufacturer is mandated to share its forecast)… Show more

Some studies also investigate information sharing in a dual‐channel supply chain setting (Yue & Liu, ; Zhang et al, ).…”

“…They show that the profits of both online and traditional retailers increase with an increase of the retailers' forecast accuracy and that forecast accuracy has a greater effect on the performance of traditional retailers. Jiang et al [19] consider a channel where the manufacturer possesses better demand forecast information. They show that risk aversion plays a critical role in the firms' sharing decisions and impact of forecast accuracy.…”

“…Also, such kind of assumption is popular in the operations management literature. For instance, Gan et al (2004), Xiao and Yang (2009), Chiu et al (2011), Li et al (2014), Jiang et al (2016), and Li et al(2016) all consider a supply chain consisting of a risk-neural manufacturer (or supplier) and a risk-averse retailer.…”
