Hardness–Deformation Energy Relationship in Metals and Alloys: A Comparative Evaluation Based on Nanoindentation Testing and Thermodynamic Consideration

Nanoindentation testing using a Berkovich indenter was conducted to explore the relationships among indentation hardness (H), elastic work energy (We), plastic work energy (Wp), and total energy (Wt = We + Wp) for deformation among a wide range of pure metal and alloy samples with different hardness, including iron, steel, austenitic stainless steel (H ≈ 2600–9000 MPa), high purity copper, single-crystal tungsten, and 55Ni–45Ti (mass%) alloy. Similar to previous studies, We/Wt and Wp/Wt showed positive and negative linear relationships with elastic strain resistance (H/Er), respectively, where Er is the reduced Young’s modulus obtained by using the nanoindentation. It is typically considered that Wp has no relationship with We; however, we found that Wp/We correlated well with H/Er for all the studied materials. With increasing H/Er, the curve converged toward Wp/We = 1, because the Gibbs free energy should not become negative when indents remain after the indentation. Moreover, H/Er must be less than or equal to 0.08. Thermodynamic analyses emphasized the physical meaning of hardness obtained by nanoindentation; that is, when Er is identical, harder materials show smaller values of Wp/We than those of softer ones during nanoindentation under the same applied load. This fundamental knowledge will be useful for identifying and developing metallic materials with an adequate balance of elastic and plastic energies depending on the application (such as construction or medical equipment).

The semi-automatic car parking system has been used in many cities across the world due to its many benefits, including its tiny model, compaction, need for less space, and speedy construction. The car parking system solution may hold the key to addressing the parking needs of urban areas since it has specifications that are appropriate to the needs and characteristics of HoChiMinh City. However, in terms of sustainable and aesthetically pleasing urban development, choosing the best location to place the parking model is difficult. Therefore, this research aims to determine the selection of criteria affecting the location of semi-automatic car parking criteria based on a Multicriteria Decision Making Model (MCDM). The contribution of this study is a set of guidelines with four primary criteria and eighteen sub-criteria to assist private businesses and local management organizations choose the best location for semi-automatic parking to maximize efficiency and toward urban sustainability.

The past continuously haunts Japan. It has been more than 75 years since the end of the last war and Japan has never fully reconciled with its Asian neighbors, especially China and South Korea, over the question of how to commemorate Japan’s past wrongs and atone for the physical as well as the psychological wounds it caused in Asia. In this context, also problematized is the question of intergenerational responsibility. Can the members of current generations feel responsibility and obligation to make restitution for wrongs perpetrated before they were born? If so, how? If not, why not? As it is reported that the Japanese public’s sense of affinity toward China and South Korea greatly deteriorated in the 2010s due to a series of memory disputes, it seems imperative to delve into the Japanese youth’s sense of the past. In this exploratory study, by following Barry Schwartz and his colleagues’ Judging the Past framework, we conducted college student surveys (N = 320) in 2017/2018 and interviews (N = 31) in 2017 and explored the cognitive connection between the Japanese youth’s sense of nation and their perceptions of moral responsibility for Japan’s militaristic past.
