Tooth agenesis patterns in bilateral cleft lip and palate

Abstract: Individuals with cleft lip and palate present significantly more dental anomalies, even outside the cleft area, than do individuals without clefts. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of tooth agenesis and patterns of hypodontia in a large sample of patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP). Serial panoramic radiographs (the first radiograph was taken at 10.5-13.5 yr of age) of 240 patients with BCLP (172 male patients, 68 female patients) were examined. Third molars were not included in … Show more

“…These results, clearly greater than the prevalence of dental ageneses in the normal population, correspond to higher proportions found in the literature (77% 22 and 67.6% 1 ). When we cross the variables ''dental anomalies'' and ''type of cleft'', we see an increase in the frequency of dental ageneses with the involvement of the secondary palate that agrees with the findings of other studies 2,4,9,10,12,25 . Surprisingly, we see a marked increase in the number of ageneses on the mandible in cases of isolated cleft palate.…”

“…Elles s'accompagnent d'anomalies dentaires plus ou moins importantes, même dans les formes mineures. Toutes les dents sont susceptibles d'être affectées, mais ce sont les dents proches de la fente qui sont les plus atteintes [2,3]. Ce sujet a été largement traité par de nombreux auteurs, mais aucune étude n'a été publiée concernant la population malgache.…”

“…Types of dental anomalies include anodontia (absence of all teeth) or hypodontia (absence of some teeth), supernumerary teeth, amelogenesis imperfecta and dentinogenesis imperfect. Many dental anomalies are part of a developmental syndrome that is caused by defective genes, which not only regulate tooth development but also control development of other organs and tissues such as palate, eye and heart (Bartzela et al, 2010;Klein et al, 2013;Matalova et al, 2008;Miletich and Sharpe, 2003). In many congenital syndrome, tooth appears to be a very sensitive organ to a reduced activity of a specific genetic pathway (Li et al, 2014).…”
