Tooth loss in aggressive periodontitis: Results 25 years after active periodontal therapy in a private practice

Abstract: Aim To assess tooth loss in patients with aggressive periodontitis (AgP) 10–35 years after active periodontal therapy (APT) in a private practice and to detect possible factors influencing tooth loss. Material and Methods In 100 patients with AgP, tooth loss was recorded over a median follow‐up period of 25.5 years after APT, retrospectively. Patient‐ and tooth‐level factors were assessed with a Cox frailty regression model. Results Of 2,380 teeth, 227 were lost during a median follow‐up time of 25.5 years (2.… Show more

“…Similar results to ours may also be found in a retrospective long‐term study over a period of 25 years in a dental practice setting, who reported an overall tooth loss of 9.5% during SPT, significantly influenced by location/jaw, tooth type, baseline bone loss and abutment function (Bäumer et al., 2020). However, tooth loss was evaluated only in patients diagnosed with aggressive periodontitis.…”

“…A direct comparison, for example with the long‐term study of Axelsson et al., 2004, who evaluated tooth loss over a 30‐year‐period on patient level, is aggravated, because of the different statistical approaches. Only few studies document data over 20 years after APT on tooth level (Bäumer et al., 2020; Graetz et al., 2017; Martinez‐Canut, 2015).…”

“…The severity of periodontal disease and the associated risk of tooth loss are higher in molars than in non‐furcated teeth (Bäumer et al., 2019; Hirschfeld & Wasserman, 1978; Papapanou, Wennstrom, & Grondahl, 1989). Therefore, correct diagnosis of furcation involvement (FI) is crucial for both prognosis estimation and optimization of treatment strategies (Avila‐Ortiz, De Buitrago, & Reddy, 2015; Scarfe, Azevedo, Pinheiro, Priaminiarti, & Sales, 2017).…”
