Tooth Movement After Infrared Laser Phototherapy: Clinical Study in Rodents

Abstract: Objectives: The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of low-power laser on tooth movement in rats. Background: Tooth movement is closely related to the process of bone remodeling. The biologic result, with the application of a force to the tooth, is bone absorption on the pressure side and neoformation on the traction side of the alveolar bone. The laser photobiomodulation is capable of providing an increase in cellular metabolism, blood flow, and lymphatic drainage. Methods: Thirty young-adul… Show more

“…16 Three other separate studies, using different methodologies (e.g., fewer laser applications, extra-oral application of laser, and higher orthodontic forces) found no significant difference between photobiostimulation and controls in affecting the rate of OTM. [23][24][25] Similar benefits of increased OTM were not seen in beagle dogs at 2 months of LLLT despite histological evidence suggestive of increased osteoclastic activity. 26 With regard to the use of LED, conclusions from the limited number of LED studies suggest that it does not have an effect on tooth movement.…”
