Top-Seeded Solution Growth and Optical Properties of Deep-UV Birefringent Crystal Ba2Ca(B3O6)2

Abstract: Single crystals of the birefringent material Ba 2 Ca(B 3 O 6 ) 2 (BCBO) with dimensions up to 40 × 28 × 10 mm 3 were successfully grown by top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) method from B 2 O 3 −NaF flux. It exhibits high transmittance in the range of 190−3000 nm with UV cutoff of 178 nm, which is much shorter than that (189 nm) of the commercial UV birefringent crystal, the high-temperature phase of BaB 2 O 4 (α-BBO). Meanwhile, BCBO crystal has large birefringence (Δn = n o − n e = 0.2524−0.0862) in the wavel… Show more

“…Flux technique for growth of single crystals (or the molten solution technique) is a widely used technique for obtaining the high-quality samples of sufficient size [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Depending on the crystal-chemical properties of the compound to be synthesized in frameworks of this technique it is necessary to choose the solvent.…”

“…Of these, the BO 3 unit is considered as an excellent birefringent functional unit. First, borates with parallel‐aligned isolated BO 3 , B 2 O 5 , or B 3 O 6 groups can give large birefringence, such as α‐BBO (0.122 at 546 nm), Na 3 Ba 2 (B 3 O 6 ) 2 F (0.114 at 546 nm), Ba 2 Ca(B 3 O 6 ) 2 (0.125 at 546 nm) and Li 2 Na 2 B 2 O 5 (0.097 at 546 nm) . Therefore, the more highly polymerized coplanar BO 3 groups are expected to have the larger average anisotropic polarizability.…”

“…516 Recently, numerous scientific endeavors have been made to find new birefringent materials with good nonlinear optical (NLO) performance, 1721 and these studies suggest that the molecular construction by using large π-conjugated anionic groups like (BO 3 ) 3– , (B 3 O 6 ) 3– , (NO 2 ) − , (CO 3 ) 2– , (NO 3 ) − , (HCOO) − , and (C 3 N 3 O 3 ) 3– would be a very efficient way. 2228 By exploiting these groups, a number of excellent crystals Ca 3 (BO 3 ) 2 , 29 Ba 2 Ca(B 3 O 6 ) 2 , 30 KSrCO 3 F, 31 Ba 2 NO 3 (OH) 3 , 32 K 3 (COOH) 3 [B(OH) 3 ] 2 , 33 Ba 3 (C 3 N 3 O 3 ) 2 , 34 etc. have been designed and synthesized.…”
