Topic modeling of the quality of guest’s experience using latent Dirichlet allocation: western versus eastern perspectives

Abstract: Purpose This study aims to understand the satisfaction and needs of eastern and western travelers as hotel guest, based on their experiences as seen in guest reviews and review topics. Design/methodology/approach Considering 2,965 and 1,035 western and eastern traveler reviews, respectively, from 47 countries, obtained from TripAdvisor listed-hotel in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap city in Cambodia, this study investigates the differences in hotel guest satisfaction and needs by using topic modeling (i.e. latent D… Show more

“…This round was considered conclusive for the Delphi study, as the consensus achieved among participants reached 77%, surpassing the recommended threshold of 70% [46,53,54] The complete results of the Delphi study are presented in Table 1. Topic modeling is an unsupervised machine learning technique that facilitates the analysis of large sets of documents and datasets simultaneously [62]. This technique's algorithm scans and overlaps documents to identify clusters of words that represent a theme and best characterize those documents [47].…”

“…Prior to fitting the LDA topic model, sustainability reports issued in the same years were combined and used to create a corpus of 10 text documents. The data preprocessing, including stemming and combining words, lowercase conversion, and removing stop words, numbers, symbols, and misspellings, was executed using the "tm_map", "con-tent_transformer", and "removeWords" functions from "tm" package [62,64].…”

“…In addition, customers' positive evaluations of service experiences rely on the dimensions of service atmosphere (five senses), process (interaction, customization, visibility, complexity, technology) and employees (reliability, empathy, assurance, responsiveness and tangibles) (Chang and Huang, 2016). In addition, although customers generally emphasize similar offerings such as service, location and room, cultural differences may appear in the focus of their experience around other offerings and facilities (Sann and Lai, 2023). Therefore, understanding if hotel offerings are evaluated and perceived by customers as “experience” is also critical as customer perspective is an effective tool in managing experiences, and customers generate discrete emotions of various types and cognitive responses in terms of complaints or compliments to evaluate their experiences (McColl-Kennedy et al , 2019).…”

“…Room and location are tangible hotel facilities that satisfy travelers (Sann and Lai, 2023). Room, food and beverage and facilities constitute the main themes related to customer comments on TripAdvisor (Rahimi et al , 2022).…”
