Topical 0.1% Indomethacin Solution versus Topical 0.1% Dexamethasone Solution in the Prevention of Inflammation after Cataract Surgery

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the efficacy and safety of topical 0.1% indomethacin with 0.1% dexamethasone after cataract surgery. Methods: 145 patients (indo = 71, dexa = 74) were enrolled in a randomised, double-masked study and received one drop 4 times a day of indomethacin or dexamethasone for 1 month. Results: Proteinic flare and cellular Tyndall decreased with time in both groups, with a difference in favour of indomethacin for cellular Tyndall on day 30 (p = 0.046). Conjunctival hyperaemia was less pronounced in… Show more

“…Anti-inflammatory effects from topically applied NSAIDs in eyes undergoing cataract surgery have been demonstrated in many randomized, prospective, double-masked controlled clinical studies. Measurable effects could be shown for diclofenac 0.1%, ketorolac 0.5%, indomethacin 1% and flurbiprofen 0.03% after extra- and intracapsular cataract extraction with and without implantation of an IOL [14, 15, 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69]. …”

“…Steroids and nonsteroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used in the prophylaxis and treatment of pain and inflammation associated with cataract surgery, either alone or as combination therapy [7][8][9][10][11]. In a 2014 ASCRS clinical survey [12], 41.2% of the 1,500 ophthalmic surgeons strongly agreed that low-to-moderate levels of intraocular inflammation can significantly impact postoperative visual acuity and visual quality.…”

“…The 'efficacy rate' was defined as the percentage of patients displaying absent (score ¼ 0) or mild (score ¼ 1) degree of AC flare. 22 The 'percentage of responders' was defined as the percentage of patients showing a decrease of AC flare score from baseline and those scoring 0 at baseline and also at the end point. 22 The study was designed to show that dexamethasone/ netilmicin was not inferior to TOBRADEX s .…”

Analysis of efficacy was performed by means of one-sided 97.5%-confidence intervals test, with a delta of 15%, a power of 90% and a lower margin of À15.…”
