Topical Artocarpus communis Nanoparticles Improved the Water Solubility and Skin Permeation of Raw A. communis Extract, Improving Its Photoprotective Effect

Abstract: Antioxidants from plant extracts are often used as additives in skincare products to prevent skin problems induced by environmental pollutants. Artocarpus communis methanol extract (ACM) has many biological effects, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, and photoprotective effects; however, the poor water solubility of raw ACM has limited its applications in medicine and cosmetics. Topical antioxidant nanoparticles are one of the drug-delivery systems for overcoming the poor water solubility o… Show more

“…MyNF with different ratios of MYR:HPBCD:PVP (1:20:4, 1:20:8, and 1:20:12; w / w / w ) were prepared using a modified version of the method described in [ 12 ]. Firstly, MYR, HPBCD, and PVP were added into 10 mL ethanol and then stirred with a magnetic stirrer for 90 min.…”

“…The advantages of electrospun nanofibers are the ability to mass-produce continuous nanofibers from different polymers and produce ultrathin polymer fibers with controllable compositions, diameters, and orientations, which are usually used to load hydrophobic drugs for improving dissolution due to their much greater specific surface area per unit mass [ 11 ]. Nontoxic nanocarriers are the first option for secure nanofiber compositions [ 12 ]. Previous studies indicate that 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPBCD) is an important cyclodextrin derivative that can be used as a solubilizer, encapsulation media, and stabilizer in a variety fields, including pharmaceuticals, food, and cosmetics for improving the poor water solubility and stability of the drug molecule [ 13 ].…”

“…Before the photoprotective activity evaluation, the cell viability influence of DB‐NS, raw DB powder, and DB dissolved in DMSO was first tested by MTT experiment 37,38 . As the result shown in Figure 6A, raw DB powder in three concentrations showed no significant difference compared to the control group.…”

“…To compare the cellular uptake of DB‐NS, raw DB powder water suspension, and DB dissolved in DMSO. The 2.0 × 10 5 HaCaT cells were seeded every well in 12‐well plates for 24 h incubation 38 . Each well was treated with 1 ml of 500 μg/ml DB‐NS, raw DB powder water suspension, and DB dissolved in DMSO for 24 h. Then the culture medium was removed, and the plate was washed with PBS twice.…”

“…The plant species was identified by Dr. Ming-Hong Yen of the Graduate Institute of Natural Products, College of Pharmacy, Kaohsiung Medical University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The extraction methods of AAM were described previously [ 21 ]. Briefly, a total of 200 g of dried, chipped heartwood pieces of A. altilis were mixed with 4 L of methanol (Aencore Chemical, Surrey Hills, Australia) and extracted by an ultrasonic bath (Branson 5510, Emerson Electric, Brookfield, CT, USA) for 1 h. The process was repeated twice, and the liquid extract was filtered, concentrated and then lyophilized to obtain AAM.…”
