Nappy dermatitis is a broad term used to describe an acute inflammatory reaction of the skin in the nappy area because of irritation from urine, faeces, moisture or friction. The prevalence is estimated to be between 7% and 35% in infants. Regular application of a barrier preparation at every nappy change may be a valuable component of nappy dermatitis prevention and/or treatment.
Types of studiesThis review considered randomised controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomised clinical trials, quasi randomised control studies and cohort studies where the effectiveness of nonmedicated barrier preparations was compared for preventing and/or treating nappy dermatitis.
Types of participantsAll infants and preschool children who wore nappies were included in the review, namely: • Infants 0-2 years of age • Preschool children 2-5 years who wear nappies • Infants and preschool children who have Hirschsprung's Disease, anorectal malformations or ostomy takedowns who wear nappies 4 J Rowe et al.
