Total and allergen‐specific immunoglobulin E in the serum and nasal mucosa of a nonallergic population

Abstract: The significant association between serum and nasal samples for both total and sIgE suggests that nasal IgE and serum IgE are not independent of one another. Understanding levels of IgE in the nonallergic population will help answer the questions surrounding sensitization as new diagnostic tests for locally-present IgE become available.

“…We found no association between cat allergy and SPT or serum sIgE. In a recent study, 95% of participants had nasal sIgE above a 0.10 kU/L cutoff, but only 40% had serum levels above this cutoff 8 . Similarly, Zhang et al 9 .…”

“…In a recent study, 95% of participants had nasal sIgE above a 0.10 kU/L cutoff, but only 40% had serum levels above this cutoff. 8 Similarly, Zhang et al 9 found that in children with adenotonsillar hypertrophy who tested negative for serum sIgE, local sIgE was detected in 44% of tonsils and 36% of adenoids.…”

“…However, they found more positive nasal spIgE among the control population (AR vs NAR vs healthy control: 73 vs 25 vs 43%, P = .04). Reisacher 27 also found high positivity among the healthy controls (95%) at the cutoff value of 0.1 kUA/L.…”
