Touch Screens for the Older User

Resumo: A tendência de envelhecimento da população mundial provocou um crescimento no nú-mero de pessoas na faixa de idade acima de 60 anos, também conhecida por terceira idade. Essas pessoas necessitam atualizar seus conhecimentos na tentativa de se manterem ativas e inseridas na sociedade. Nesse contexto, a educação a distância (EaD) apresenta-se como uma alternativa interessante, oferecendo conteúdo por meio da internet, com flexibilidade de hora e local de uso. Os dispositivos móveis facilitam o acesso a recursos de aprendizagem, todavia, os aplicativos requerem adaptações para as pessoas da terceira idade que, em geral, possuem uma ou mais restrições decorrentes da idade. Com o objetivo de avaliar a aderência dessas tecnologias ao grupo de pessoas da terceira idade, foram realizados testes de usabilidade com esse público na utilização de dispositivos móveis com um material previamente preparado. Foram identificados alguns aspectos relevantes para o público da terceira idade, bem como recomendações de melhorias no desenvolvimento de conteúdo. Foi também percebida grande aderência dos dispositivos selecionados ao público da terceira idade, sendo 9 dos 11 participantes os que manifestaram interesse no uso dessas tecnologias.Palavras-chave: Mobile learning. Terceira idade. Usabilidade. Abstract:The global trend of population aging has led a growth in the number of people over 60 years. These people need to update their knowledge and capabilities to remain active and inserted in the society. In this context, e-learning is an interesting alternative, offering relevant content through the Internet, anywhere and anytime. Mobile devices provide access to learning resources, however, they require adjustments to bring all these technological advances to the older people, who, in general, has one or more restrictions due to ageing. Aiming to evaluate the adherence of these technologies to the seniors, usability tests were conducted with this audience based on the use of mobile devices with a previously prepared material. It was identified relevant usability aspects to this public as well as recommendations for improvements in content development. Results pointed that 9 people among 11 interviewed manifested great interest in using these technologies.Keywords: Elderly. Mobile learning. Usability. Abstract. The design of user interfaces plays an important role in human computer interaction, especially for smartphones and tablet devices. It is very important to consider the interface design of smartphones for elderly people in order for them to benefit from the variety applications on such devices. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of user age as well as screen size on smartphone/tablet use. We evaluated the usability of smartphone interfaces for three different age groups: elderly age group (60+ years), middle age group (40-59 years) and younger age group (20-39 years). The evaluation is performed using three different screen sizes of smartphone and tablet devices: 3.2", 7", and 10.1" respectively. An eye-tracker device was employed to obtain three metrics: fixation duration, scan-path duration, and saccades amplitude. Two hypothesis were considered. First, elderly users will have both local and global processing diffieculties on smartphone/tablet use than other age groups. Second, all user age groups will be influnced by screen sizes; small screen size will have smaller saccades proportion indicating uneasy interface broswing compared to large screen size. All these results have been statistically evaluated using 2-way ANOVA.

Abstract. Smartphones and tablet devices have been rapidly proliferating, and multi-touch interaction, powerful processors and rich array of sensors make these devices an attractive service platform for older users. While there is an increasing number of work investigating the issues that elderly users experience through their interaction with mobile devices, most have focused either on evaluation of low-level interaction characteristics or on qualitative survey. Therefore, we conducted a user study with 21 elderly participants to analyze the needs and issues faced by this user group under naturalistic usage scenarios. Specifically, we interviewed each participant about their experiences, had them perform various practical tasks using our custom testing application, and analyzed the operation logs using our custom visualizations. Based on our results, we summarize the types of issues observed, present design considerations for the applications studied, and future research directions.
