Tourism and environmental performance: New evidence using a threshold regression analysis

Abstract: To verify whether the effect of tourism on environmental performance differs by the level of tourism development, a panel threshold regression approach is applied to observe the effects of tourism on environmental performance in 97 countries over the 2002–2012 periods. Our results suggest that tourism always has a significant negative influence on the environmental performance, implying that tourism will unavoidably result in environmental degradation, irrespective of how high the level of tourism development.… Show more

“…Other research, such as that by Lee and Brahmasrene (2013) and de Vita et al (2015) explores this connection along with electrical energy use, demonstrating the beneficial impact of tourism on environmental degradation; while Zaman et al (2016) determine an inverse relationship between the variables considered for an analysis in three regions of the world. According to Lv and Xu (2023), tourism always has a major detrimental impact on environmental performance, meaning that environmental deterioration will inevitably come from tourism, regardless of how developed the industry is. On the other hand, tourism will comparatively have less of an impact on environmental performance after it reaches a certain level of development.…”

“…Paramati et al provided evidence for the EKC hypothesis between tourism and carbon emissions, arguing that the EKC hypothesis for tourism applies in both developed and developing economies [ 20 ]. Lv and Xu examined the non-linear impact of tourism on the environment, arguing that, in the early stage of tourism development, tourism’s legal and regulatory systems are not perfect and the relevant supporting policies and regulations are not standardised, leading to a sharp increase in pollution; however, when tourism develops to a certain stage, the laws, regulations, standards, and policies related to tourism are also becoming increasingly improved and well-managed, thereby reducing pollutant emissions [ 22 ].…”

“…In addition, tourism may also have a non-linear effect on environmental degradation. Considering the dependence of tourism on the environment, with the development of tourism at a certain stage, the tourism industry and governments will also take measures to alleviate its negative impact on the environment [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Due to the environmental degradation caused by tourismrelated transport [9][10][11], the construction of sustainable transport systems in tourism destinations has drawn abundant attention worldwide [12][13][14]. As the preference for personalized and short-distance tours has been on the rise, scholars have pointed out the importance of rural tourism bus networks, and their positive efects on social inclusion, trafc congestion reduction, and local economics should not be ignored [5].…”
