Tourism development, natural resource abundance, and environmental sustainability: Another look at the ten most visited destinations

Abstract: Tourism contributes approximately one-fifth to total global employment. However, growth in tourism can promote an increase in transportation, energy consumption, natural resource exploration, and consequential ecological distortions. This study applies a battery of second-generation econometric techniques to investigate the influence of tourism development and natural resource on a comprehensive environmental indicator; the ecological footprint (EF), in the ten most visited destinations. The findings show that … Show more

“…The recycling or replenishing process for natural resources and use of clean energy in performing tourism activities reduce environmental pollution and vice versa (Meo et al 2021). Nathaniel and Adedoyin (2020) also represent economic expansion with tourism progress and state that the expansion of tourism increases the use of energy resources used in tourism infrastructure especially transportation. Transport facilities are one of the essential infrastructures of the world.…”

“…One of the benefits of this technique is that it is applicable in the presence of cross-sectional dependence in the panel. The technique is also appropriate if the number of cross-sectional units (N) is greater than the time (T) dimension (N > T) or if the number of cross-sectional units (N) is less than the time (T) dimension (N < T;Dumitrescu & Hurlin, 2012;Nathaniel & Adedoyin, 2020). Appendix TableDshows the feedback causality among the variables.…”

“…In addition, one of the benefits of using Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel causality is that it is more effective in the presence of CD. It is also appropriate where the number of cross‐sectional units ( N ) is less than the time period ( T ) (Dumitrescu and Hurlin 2012; Nathaniel and Adedoyin 2020).…”
