Toward a Comprehensive and Integrated Strategy of the European Marine Research Infrastructures for Ocean Observations

Abstract: Toward a Strategy of EU Marine RIs participates and supports concrete actions to increase the quality and quantity of more integrated and sustained observations in the ocean worldwide. From an innovation perspective, the next decade will increasingly count on marine RIs to support the development of new technologies and their validation in the field, increasing market uptake and produce a shift in observing capabilities and strategies.

“…The study of oceans, ecosystems, and biological and nonbiological resources is addressed holistically by different scientific disciplines. Research consortia create multi and interdisciplinary efforts that allow understanding of this complex global system to develop mutual strategies for solving problems and the sustainable use of the resources of the planet (Dañobeitia et al, 2020). Additionally, consortia contribute to the generation of knowledge, promote research, participate in specialist training and the development and innovation of new technologies and elaborate scientifically sound strategies in decision making.…”

“…Additionally, consortia contribute to the generation of knowledge, promote research, participate in specialist training and the development and innovation of new technologies and elaborate scientifically sound strategies in decision making. At the same time, consortia provide support to coordinate and integrate solutions in synergy among academia, government, society and industry (OceanObs, 2019;Dañobeitia et al, 2020;Rotter et al, 2020).…”

“…Seafloor multiparametric cabled observatories represent a wellestablished solution for the remote and continuous monitoring of the marine environment (Favali and Beranzoli, 2006;Ruhl et al, 2011;De Leo et al, 2018;Aguzzi et al, 2019;Dañobeitia et al, 2020;Rountree et al, 2020). These permanent seafloor infrastructures host complex and multidisciplinary sets of physical, chemical, and geological sensors designed to meet the challenges of integrated and large-scale oriented basic and applied science.…”

“…Marine assemblages are composed by species spanning their size over several orders of magnitude within all kingdoms of life. Approaching ecosystem complexity requires an adaptive integration between data acquisition and data-analysis tools, covering established environmental observations (i.e., physical, geo-chemical) with innovative sampling approaches (i.e., optoacoustic and environmental DNA-eDNA based) over different temporal frequencies and durations [2][3][4].…”
