Toward an institution-based paradigm

Abstract: As part of the broader intellectual movement throughout the social sciences that is centered on new institutionalism, the institution-based view has emerged as a leading perspective in the strategic management literature. This article (1) traces the emergence of the institution-based view, (2) reviews its growth in the last two decades, and (3) responds to three of its major criticisms. We also identify four promising research directions-deglobalization and sanctions, competitive dynamics, hybrid organizations… Show more

“…Somewhat similar to what occurred in mainstream institutional theory, in CSR, scholars who once tended to highlight the role of formal institutions have more recently started to explore the importance of informal institutions and the integration of the two types (e.g. Brammer et al, 2012;Dau, et al, 2022;Estrin and Prevezer, 2011;Peng et al, 2023;Salimath and Cullen, 2010). Now, CSR scholars are at the evolutionary stage at which they need to integrate formal and informal institutions to better understand the CSR adoption process and related issues.…”

“…This multifaceted approach extends further to concepts like institutional logic (Thornton et al, 2015), institutional change (Kingston & Caballero, 2009), institutional complexity (Greenwood et al, 2011), institutional polycentrism (Batjargal et al, 2013), and institutional voids (Doh et al, 2017), all of which contribute to the diverse tapestry of IB research (Rottig, 2016). Together, these approaches enrich the understanding of institutions' impact on IB (Peng et al, 2023), fostering an evolving and intertwined narrative within the field.…”

“…The debate that institutions matter in the IB and strategy fields has increased in the past two decades, mainly in the emerging markets context (Aguilera and Grøgaard, 2019;Jackson and Deeg, 2008;Monticelli et al, 2018;Nuruzzaman et al, 2020;Peng et al, 2023). Thus, centered on new institutionalism (North, 1990) and conceptualized mostly from the emerging market perspective (Peng, 2002;Peng et al, 2008Peng et al, , 2009, the institutional-based view integrates and extends the isolated contributions of the industry-and resource-based views in the EMNE setting and adds the "third leg" of the "strategy tripod".…”
