Toward Hybrid Modeling and Automatic Planimetry for Graphic Documentation of the Archaeological Heritage: The Cortina Family Pantheon in the Cemetery of Valencia

Abstract: The current trend towards the hybrid methodology of combining terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) with close-range and UAV-assisted photogrammetry is becoming the most effective method for the complete capture of archaeological sites. In this work we consider three objectives in this regard: firstly, to check an integration procedure, based on different capture techniques, to obtain the best possible complete digital model in different situations related to size, lighting, and occlusions. Secondly, a "laser scanni… Show more

“…In this case, when performing the meshing of the 3D surface, there are no differentials in the form of noise, therefore, making it not difficult to vectorize the architectural sections. Cuts in a 3D model allow the edges to be assessed on sudden changes in the direction of the normal of the triangles of the mesh, thus, according to [93], leading to a reliable interpretation of the model rule.…”

“…In other cases, the lack of indoor light leads to the use of a synchronized flash trigger to perform the photogrammetric survey [28]. On other occasions, it is necessary to consider using a hybrid methodology [29][30][31], allowing the combination of several methods [32], as the best choice. In the work carried out on the unearthed friezes in the tunnels at the Archaeological Site of Holmul in Guatemala [33], a comparison study was performed on the data acquired by means of a structured light scanner and a terrestrial laser scanner.…”

“…The integration of geometric recording methods is often considered in order to overcome the limitations imposed by individual techniques [30][31][32][33][34][35]. Selecting the appropriate methodologies for reality-based documentation (sensors, hardware, software) and data processing procedures, designing production workflows that involve heterogeneous recorded data, and assuring that the final result is in accordance with all of the given technical specifications poses significant challenges [36].…”
