Toward Tailored All-Spin Molecular Devices

Abstract: Molecular based spintronic devices offer great potential for future energy-efficient information technology as they combine ultimately small size, high-speed operation, and low-power consumption. Recent developments in combining atom-by-atom assembly with spin-sensitive imaging and characterization at the atomic level have led to a first prototype of an all-spin atomic-scale logic device, but the very low working temperature limits its application. Here, we show that a more stable spintronic device could be ac… Show more

“…(18) ff.]. Exploiting this in combination with the STM's imaging capability has allowed chemical identification 23,26,27,97,[106][107][108][109][110][111][112][113] . This in turn has enabled atomistic modeling of the junction using ab-initio calculations [114][115][116][117] , also including strong interaction effects [118][119][120] , giving a detailed picture of transport on the atomic scale [121][122][123][124][125][126][127] .…”

“…For atoms, the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yoshida (RKKY) mechanism is typically dominant, in which the coupling between the local spins is mediated by the conduction electrons of the metal. However, for molecules with multiple spin centers or supramolecular arrangements of spin‐polarized molecules on surfaces, the situation is less clear, since RKKY interactions are expected to be in competition with the spin coupling mediated by bridging ligands in the molecule (Fig. , bottom).…”

“…[14] It is well known that spin is another degree of freedom for electrons, which can transmit information as a binary signal for implementing the functions of spin logic gates. [16][17][18] In a recent work, [19] we proposed a set of spin logic gates in manganese phthalocyanine-based molecular combinational circuits, such as AND and OR gates.
