Towards 6G wireless networks-challenges and potential technologies

Abstract: As 5G technology is advancing towards its final phase of development and the deployment of 5G networks is underway, academic, development and industrial communities are already moving towards the research and development of 6G wireless networks. While 5G technologies had been hauled as an enabler for Internet of Everything, many limitations of such cellular systems are coming to light as they are being deployed. These drawbacks of 5G networks have motivated worldwide interest on developing the next generation … Show more

“…At a little lower altitude than satellites, UAVs functions as either mobile base stations while being afloat in space to cover a large footprint of terrestrial mobile users or act as relays (hotspots) to extend the coverage of base stations where the mobile infrastructure is hard to setup and thereby serve a greater number of users [18]. One of the foreseen applications of UAV communication in 6G networks will be to provide rural connectivity at a reduced cost [76,151]. Features of UAV communication: Easy deployment and network setup are critical features of UAV to enable flexible range extension or coverage enhancement of wireless communication.…”

“…International standardization organizations such as the 3rd Generation Partner Project (3GPP) and International Telecommunications Union (ITU) regard the satellite communication system as one of the important scenarios in researches of the next generation communication system. And satellite communications have been included in researches of non-terrestrial networks (NTN) and 6G [1,2,3]. Different from terrestrial mobile networks and existing narrowband satellite networks, next generation satellite communications (NGSC) will be combined with 5G communication systems [4,5,6,7,8].…”
