Building information modelling (BIM) technology has been focusing on the creation, sharing and use of a comprehensive digital twin of the facility under construction or renovation. It is believed that a more comprehensive, structured and complete model would be better. The aim of this paper and the underlying research is to reaffirm the view that the essence of information is to inform the user and that the main purpose of information models is that they are informative – that they contain the necessary information. Parsimonious information is information that is necessary but as simple as possible. Our hypothesis is that in many cases simpler models could be more useful, as they do not introduce technological barriers with the usually involved low- and medium-level contractors. One such case is the energy retrofitting of existing buildings. Many public and residential buildings with poor energy performance are located all over the world, especially in Eastern and Central Europe, as well as in China. They are an efficient target for a significant improvement in their energy performance by improving the building envelope and openings. The paper presents an economical process model for the modernisation of existing buildings. This model provides a basis for a parsimonious product model, which is currently under development. The broader objective of the research presented is to examine cases where a heavy information model may not be necessary and where a detailed process definition – as described in the BIM implementation plan and related documents – would lead to over-specification that would limit the free dynamics of a workflow.

Throughout the world there are thousands of residential and public buildings that have been built during the reconstruction and rapid urbanization after the 2 nd world war, particularly Eastern and Central Europe as well as in China. These are the most efficient target for mass improvement of their energy use through the improvements of façade insulation and windows. Advanced information technology (IT) -including building information modelling technology (BIM) -is not used very often in these renovations. Our hypothesis is that the use of BIM could be more efficient if it would focus on the essential information needs of the actors involved.The key idea of BIM -structured collaborative shared database of all required information -should be preserved but the model should be parsimonious. The paper presents the ongoing research in the context of a bilateral Chinese-Slovenian project with the goal of designing parsimonious information management for the retrofitting of existing buildings. The broader goal of the work is to study information modelling supporting works where a complete information model may not be needed at all and where a detail process definition -as outlined in BIM execution plan and related documents -would lead to overspecification, constraining the workflow.

Nowadays new and modern tools should be actively used in buildings energy retrofitting processes. Handmade measuring and 2D design process should be minimized as possible and by replaced by advanced computer technologies such as automated data proceedings, 3D scanning and automated production lines. All these measures will allow significant minimization failures in design, energy simulation and construction. Available computing capacities allows data proceeding in reasonable time and quality. 3D building model is an efficient tool to develop precise retrofitting project and to make correct energy consumption estimation3D building model allows precise dynamic energy simulation using such software as IDA-ICE, RISUKA, IES, EnergyPlus etc. This research provides detailed analysis of existing buildings whole 3Ddevelopment process from scanning to creation of model.
